Professional Organizations

I'm thinking about joining a professional organization for illustrators. I'd like one that will hold workshops or conferences and give useful information about marketing yourself, networking, insider tips...etc. What organizations do you belong to? Do you find the membership useful?

I belong to SCBWI. It is a wonderful resource and they offer all that you are interested in. You are apart of regional chapters as well as the national organization. Some regions have better responses than others... Right now I am the only illustrator in my area so I have to find other outlets, but the meetings are still useful and the Website is a wonderful tool...

Nikki, have you attended their annual conference before? Looks like the Winter Conference is coming up in February. I bet it would be a good learning experience, but I wonder if most people who attend are published, experienced illustrators. Would a conference like this be appropriate for newbies?

I also belong to SCBWI, but haven't done much with it, except read the mailings I get. There's a local chapter near me, but I don't have a car and have a hard time getting to events that aren't in the city. And I've never mustered the funds/courage to go to a national conference. Still, I plan to remain a member and become active sooner or later. I have access to some great resources through their web site, and they mail a great Publications Guide each year that rivals The Children's Book Writers and Illustrators Market. And one day I'll go to the conference in LA or New York...

Lindsay, I get the impression that it's perfectly okay to go to the conference if you're not published yet. They have a portfolio review piece that seems like it's almost tailored to the rookies like us.
